Shin splints is a condition that causes leg pain in the front of the lower leg. The most common cause of shin splints is inflammation of the periostium of the tibia (a connective sheath surrounding the bone). Muscle forces on the periostium causes inflammation. Shin splints is the result of overuse and can be also be attributed to running on hard surfaces. Over pronation makes one more susceptible to this injury.

Symptoms include:
  • Tenderness over the inside of the shin.
  • Lower leg pain.
  • Occasional swelling.
  • Lumps over the bone.
  • Leg pain when the toes or foot are bent downwards.
Treatment:
Non-surgical treatment
  • Cold therapy applied to the inflammation helps stimulate blood flow, and relieves the leg pain associated with inflammation. Cold therapy should be applied several times over the course of the day.
  • Taping helps reduce muscle stress.
  • Stretching will help to maintain flexibility of the muscles.
  • Foot and ankle alignment can be treated with products such as arch supports, heel wedges and custom orthotics these products can be used to correct for irregularities such as over pronation.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and Celebrex may be used to decrease leg pain. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting these medications.
