A spur is a hook of bone that can form on the heel (calcaneus) and is often associated with plantar fasciitis. Heel spurs are commonly seen in patients who have a history of foot pain caused by plantar fasciitis. The heel spur is not to the primary cause of heel pain, rather inflammation and irritation of the plantar fascia is believed to be the primary problem.

Heel spurs form in some patients who have plantar fasciitis. They tend to occur in patients who have had the problem for a prolonged period of time.
Symptoms Include:
  • Foot pain in sole of foot, especially upon waking.
  • Heel pain on the bottom center of the heel.
  • Mild swelling of the heel.
  • Altered walking pattern.
Treatment:
Non surgical treatment
  • Custom orthotic devices that fit into your shoe help correct structural abnormalities.
  • Padding and strapping: Placing pads in the shoe softens the impact of walking. Strapping helps support the foot and reduce strain on the fascia.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and Celebrex may be used to decrease heel pain. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting these medications.
  • Removable walking cast or brace: A removable walking cast or brace can be used to keep your foot immobile for a few weeks to allow it to rest and heal.
  • Icing, cold therapy to stimulate blood flow and relieve the heel pain associated with inflammation. Cold therapy should be applied several times over the course of the day.
  • Physical therapy: Exercises and other physical therapy measures may be used to help provide relief.
Surgical treatment
  • Plantar fascia release.
  • Remove the bone spur.
