Plantar Fasciitis   Click to View Products for Plantar Fasciitis Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the layer of tissue that supports the arch of the foot. Repeated tears of the plantar fascia cause heel pain. Sometimes plantar fasciitis is mistakenly called a heel spur. There are a number of causes for plantar fasciitis. Improperly fit shoes or overuse (running too fast, too far, too soon) may hurt the plantar fascia. Individuals with flat feet or high arches and poor ankle alignment are at increased risk of developing plantar fasciitis. Symptoms Include:
Pain in sole of foot, especially upon waking. Pain on the inner side of the heel. Mild swelling of the heel.
Treatment: Non-surgical treatment Night splints: A splint worn on your calf and foot while you sleep. This stretches the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon overnight. Orthotics: Custom-fitted shoe inserts (orthotics) to help evenly distribute pressure on your feet. Rehabilitation: A series of exercises to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon and to strengthen lower leg muscles. Icing, cold therapy to stimulate blood flow and relieve the heel pain associated with inflammation. Cold therapy should be applied several times over the course of the day. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and Celebrex may be used to decrease heel pain.
