Repetitive Stress Injury Click to View Products for Repetitive Stress Injury Repetitive stress injuries are a set of conditions caused when too much stress is placed on a joint. Repetitive stress injuries take place when the same action is performed over and over. Repetitive motions performed during normal work or other daily activities can result in repetitive motion disorders such as tendonitis and bursitis. Tendons connect muscle to bone and a bursa is a small sac filled with fluid that acts as cushion between tendons and bones. Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon. Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. DeQuervain's syndrome is a common tendon disorder of the hand. It develops when the tendons on the side of the wrist and at the base of the thumb become irritated from repetitive bending of the wrist.
Symptoms include: Pain along the back of the thumb. Pain from movement or grasping objects. Swelling.
Treatment: Non-surgical Splinting or thumb spica the wrist and thumb to minimize unwanted motion. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and Celebrex may be used to decrease pain.Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting these medications. Cold therapy to reduce swelling and relieve pain. Steroid injection into the tendon sheath. Surgical treatment Surgical decompression or release to give the inflamed tendons more room.
