Correct alignment allows one to grasp and manipulate small items with the hand. A fracture, usually a result of impact trauma, can result in improper alignment that could effect finger and hand function. Symptoms include: Swelling with pain and tenderness. Deformity in severe fractures. Limited range of motion.
Treatment: Finger fractures can be treated with non-surgical and surgical procedures. Surgical intervention is typically not considered unless it is a complex fracture. Non-surgical treatment Taping one finger to another “buddy” taping limits movement of a stable fracture. Splint to immobilize an unstable fracture. Limited activity and cold therapy to control pain and swelling. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and Celebrex may be used to decrease pain.Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting these medications. Surgical treatment Surgery to insert pins or wires to stabilize an unstable fracture. Open repair with screws and plates to stabilize a complicated fracture.
